in New York State:

Limited Liability Company  (“LLC”) is an unincorporated business organization of one or more persons who generally have limited liability for the contractual obligations and other liabilities of the business. 

In New York State, a person seeking to start a LLC needs to fill out certain forms as well as have business information(legal name, address, etc) and $250. The form Articles of Organization, form number DOS 1336, requires a $200 dollar fee while the Certificate of Publication requires a $50 dollar fee. Beyond that they have the option to pay for the Availability of  Name, costing $5, Reservation of Name, costing $20, and the Expedited Handling Fee, costing between $25 and $150. Payment options include personal checks, postal money orders, or credit cards all payable to the NYS Department of State.
